Mission Statement

Active Minds at the University of Michigan (Active Minds - UM) is a chapter of a national nonprofit organization that focuses on fostering student mental wellness. Active Minds - UM is dedicated to encouraging students to reprioritize mental health, connecting students to on-campus mental health resources, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health through education, and creating an inclusive and compassionate community.

"Active Minds empowers students to speak openly about mental health in order to educate others and encourage help-seeking. We are changing the culture on campuses and in the community by providing information, leadership opportunities and advocacy training to the next generation." - Active Minds, Inc.

Establishment of Active Minds

On March 24th, 2000, Brian died of suicide. He was only 22. After Brian's death, his sister, Alison Malmon, started Active Minds in her dorm room. Today Active Minds is everywhere- more than 400 colleges now host a chapter. Brian inspired this vibrant community of hope.
